1 NOTE From Harbour Book
2 CONT Harbour History, Compiled by Nina Harbour Champion, Copied from records o
2 CONC f Tom
2 CONT and Beryl Harbour of Bloomfield Iowa
2 CONT According to a story told by Grandpa Harbour (Jesse Harbour) as related b
2 CONC y my
2 CONT father (Cyrus) and his cousin (Eli Harbour) only one Harbour ever came t
2 CONC o
2 CONT America. He wanted to come but was too poor to pay his passage. So he s
2 CONC tole a
2 CONT pair of shoes and the government transported him to Virginia. He had t
2 CONC o work
2 CONT very hard. I think this story is true. Ship passage was very expensiv
2 CONC e in
2 CONT Colonial days. Also over 300 crimes in the 17th cnetury were punishabl
2 CONC e in
2 CONT England by death. The prisons were crowded by debtors and petty crimin
2 CONC als. The
2 CONT government transported many to the colonies where they were usually bou
2 CONC nd out
2 CONT for a term of years to pay for their passage, usually seven years. Also
2 CONC
2 CONT Grandpa
2 CONT Harbour (Jesse) should have known he was born in Champaign Co., Ohio in 1
2 CONC 817.
2 CONT His father Elisha Harbour was one of the earliest pioneers in the count
2 CONC y having
2 CONT gone there by horseback from Virginia not long after 1800. He was marr
2 CONC ied
2 CONT there March 1804. Later other Hrabour's followed him from Patrick Co. V
2 CONC a, his
2 CONT brother William, Jesse Harbour, Elizabeth Harbour and probably his pare
2 CONC nts Joel
2 CONT and Sarah Harbour. The land records in Patrick Co. show that his paren
2 CONC ts sold
2 CONT all their land, 464 acres in 1809. So it is supposed they moved to Ohi
2 CONC o. So
2 CONT Grandpa might have heard the story from his grandfather. His grandfath
2 CONC er Joel
2 CONT was a young man at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Indepe
2 CONC ndence.
2 CONT During 1777 all men of Va. were asked to renounce allegiance to the Cro
2 CONC wn of
2 CONT England and to swear an oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Va. I
2 CONC n the
2 CONT list of those in Henry County who took the oath appears the name of Joe
2 CONC l
2 CONT Harbour. I found this list in a book in Los angeles, California libara
2 CONC y. I
2 CONT also found indication that he probably served as a private in the
2 CONT Revolutionary War and was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
2 CONT
2 CONT This cannot be confirmed from Washington D.C. as there is no record tha
2 CONC t he
2 CONT ever applied for a pension or western lands on the basis of service. Th
2 CONC e war
2 CONT department wrote me that their records of the Revolutionary War are inc
2 CONC omplete.
2 CONT A Noah Harbour of Halifax Co. Virginia, undoubtedly a relative did rec
2 CONC eive a
2 CONT pension. I come so near being the yougest grandchild that I have been a
2 CONC t a
2 CONT great disadvantage in collecting the history. I never had a chance to k
2 CONC now the
2 CONT older members of the family.
2 CONT
2 CONT Also, our people have been pioneers in each generation and as the famil
2 CONC ies
2 CONT scattered the older family records were lost.
2 CONT
2 CONT Grandpa Harbour (Jesse) had an older cousin John Arrowsmith, the oldest s
2 CONC on of
2 CONT Ezekiel Arrowsmith (who was a brother of Katherine Arrowsmith wife of E
2 CONC lisha
2 CONT Harbour, my Grandpa Harbour's mother) who left Champaign Co. Ohio and s
2 CONC ettled
2 CONT near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Joel and Jesse Harbour, brothers, with their w
2 CONC ives and
2 CONT their oldest sister Betsy Wilson with her husband and children followed h
2 CONC im in
2 CONT January 1841. John Arrowsmith was a surveyor and helped survey Davis C
2 CONC o., Iowa
2 CONT to the west after a new treaty with the Indians opened the main part of I
2 CONC owa to
2 CONT settlement. At first only a strip about three counties wide next to th
2 CONC e
2 CONT Missisippi River was open for settlement. In 1846, the spring the Morm
2 CONC ons
2 CONT crossed Iowa, Joel and Jesse Harbour moved to Davis Co. where they spen
2 CONC t the
2 CONT rest of their lives. The Mormons helped them get out the logs for thei
2 CONC r cabins.
2 CONT One of these log cabins still stands on the farm of Eli Harbour, Joel'
2 CONC s
2 CONT youngest son. They use it mainly to store wood for winter. (Note: This c
2 CONC abin
2 CONT has been donated by Thomas Joel Harbour, son of Eli Harbour, to the Blo
2 CONC omfield,
2 CONT Iowa Historical Society. It has been moved into Bloomfield, restored, a
2 CONC nd is
2 CONT now on display there). Joel and Jesse helped build the first school in t
2 CONC heir
2 CONT neighborhood, the old Harbour school which their children attended.
2 CONT
2 CONT Grandpa Harbour had very dark hair and eyes, spoke in a loud voice, had a k
2 CONC een
2 CONT sense of history, belonged to the Methodist Church, loved to joke and l
2 CONC ike all
2 CONT Harbour men was very kind to his family.
2 CONT
2 CONT In the spring of 1886 he died of pneumonia at the age of 68. His older b
2 CONC rother
2 CONT Joel had been killed at the age of 51 by a tree falling on him when he a
2 CONC nd
2 CONT Newton were cutting wood. Joel was named for his grandfather the Joel H
2 CONC arbour
2 CONT who lived in Patrick Co. Virginia. (Henry Co. was cut into two countie
2 CONC s -
2 CONT Patrick and Henry Co.)

2 CONT My Story

2 CONT my mother always had flowers. They made a place for a pallet just back o
2 CONC f the

2 CONT and play during the long trip.
2 CONT Five months old Ina rested on a pillow in a box between them on the s

2 CONT An extra horse, a milk cow and a yearling heifer, were led behind th

2 CONT by ropes, a crate of chickens, hens and one rooster, were tied on one s

2 CONT They drove south from Drummond (85 miles approximately) to a 1/4 sec

2 CONT (1902)
2 CONT They spent one night in El Reno and arrived this virgin land April 1
2 CONC 9, 1902,
2 CONT 3 days before my mother's 25th birthday.
2 CONT They drove stakes in the ground to keep the mattress off the damp ea

2 CONT the stars that first night. And the next morning awakened to locate a h

2 CONT My parents told me that Ina was very much alert, and at once began t

2 CONT Seventy-six years later, Ina returned to Drummond, still looking at t

2 NOTE When I was junior and Paul a senior, I had a date with his brother Duan
3 CONC e. We went to a party at Vivian Slaughter’s house—she being a very clo
3 CONC se pal of mine and cousin of Paul.
3 CONT At the party we drew straws or to find our partner to eat with after ga
3 CONC mes and dancing. I drew Paul. I was so mad! I had the date with Duan
3 CONC e. Duane was more outgoing and Paul more quiet. We ate and said few w
3 CONC ords, but a week later he asked me for a date. I dated him after that f
3 CONC or three years. There were no other boyfriends the last year before we m
3 CONC arried. Occasionally he and I dated someone else, but then always got b
3 CONC ack together. He was the one for me. In those days teenagers dated mo
3 CONC re people and had one best boy/girlfriend, but we finally only went out w
3 CONC ith each other.
3 CONT
3 CONT Paul had a chance to go to Tulsa and stay with his Aunt Louise and go t
3 CONC o college, but his Dad needed him to help farm. Duane ha gone to Nebra
3 CONC ska to work and Louis and Carl were elsewhere employed. So poor Grossp
3 CONC apa (Karl) needed help, and it had to be Paul. Paul was brilliant and w
3 CONC ould have made a good student, but I believe he was happy farming and b
3 CONC eing our head of family. We all really loved him, too.
3 CONT
3 CONT I went the second year out of high school to Chickasha and enrolled in a w
3 CONC omen’s college. On arriving home that evening, my mother was criticall
3 CONC y ill with a ruptured appendix. She was three month recovering, and I d
3 CONC idn’t even begin to want to leave he. So I stayed and learned to milk c
3 CONC ows, keep house, bake, do laundry and everything that went with it. By n
3 CONC ext term I’d thought I would start school, but Paul begged me to stay. S
3 CONC o two years after graduation on my 18th birthday, he and I were married a
3 CONC t the parsonage of the Wakita Methodist Church. Pastor Draper and his w
3 CONC ife (I played for church and was Sunday School Superintendent by this t
3 CONC ime) and my parents were there. Paul’s cousin Lila Greenwalt and Georg
3 CONC e Wirtz were our attendants and also Doris England.
3 CONT
3 CONT Doris and I dressed at home and Lila and Paul at their Grandma DuBois’ h
3 CONC ouse. It was terribly muddy on the streets, and George Wirtz picked ev
3 CONC eryone up to go to the church parsonage. Somehow George dropped the li
3 CONC cense in the mud, and when they got to the church, it was missing,. The
3 CONC y had to go back and look and there it was—deep in the mud. They retri
3 CONC eved and cleaned it as best as they could—as Mama, Daddy, Doris, and Li
3 CONC la and I waited patiently at the Drapers.
3 CONT
3 CONT After the wedding we all went to the drug store and had a soda. Sounds a d
3 CONC ull deal, but most went to a justice of the peace. You see it was depr
3 CONC ession years, and lots of folk had little or no money. Some couldn’t ev
3 CONC en buy a ring. We each had one—simple and plain, but a ring. Oh yes, w
3 CONC e went to Anthony and spent the night at the hotel. We returned to Waki
3 CONC ta the next morning where I went to Mrs. Wright’s and taught my piano l
3 CONC essons-.35 each. $2.50 would buy a big supply of groceries in 1936.
3 CONT
3 CONT Paul and I stayed with Mama and Daddy while we painted and papered the h
3 CONC ome we were to move into. My Dad bought a house and twenty acres for u
3 CONC s to move into. There was a barn, chicken house, and cellar, plus a wa
3 CONC sh house and new WPA (a classy outhouse). We did have electricity for w
3 CONC ashing and ironing. The house had 6 rooms and I thought we fixed it up r
3 CONC eally neat. (It still stands today in devastation. I think someone li
3 CONC ves there, but it should be torn away. The Catholic Church stands wher
3 CONC e our barn was, and houses etc. are where our field and pasture were.)
3 CONT
3 CONT We had 4 or 5 cows, 100 chickens, and a cellar full of home canned vege
3 CONC tables and fruit and cured hams. We hatched chickens in our incubators
3 CONC . We marked X on the side of the eggs and O on the other, so we were a
3 CONC ble to turn the eggs both morning and evening for three weeks At that t
3 CONC ime the little guys chipped the shell and fluffed up the yellow fuzz on t
3 CONC heir tiny bodies. Usually 100 or 125 would hatch out of 150 eggs. Paul w
3 CONC ould take them to a warm chicken house, called a "Brooder." It had an o
3 CONC il heated lamp with an umbrella-like tin cover to keep them warm. It w
3 CONC as a chore to keep the heat even and keep them from packing up and smot
3 CONC hering each other for the first few days. When they were 8 weeks old, w
3 CONC e could fry them and sell some—also keep the pullets (young hens) for t
3 CONC he coming year. We sold eggs and cream to a produce uptown. I could b
3 CONC uy hamburger, one loaf of bread and a head of lettuce for the money two d
3 CONC ozen eggs paid us. A full grown hen sold for a dollar. One time I want
3 CONC ed a new perm and shoes and anklets for Jeannie, so I just sold four he
3 CONC ns.
3 CONT
3 CONT After we were all moved in our first home, we furnished four rooms and r
3 CONC ented two rooms out for $15 a month. We had $100 we had from a bank ni
3 CONC ght prize at the movies and $30.00 for a wedding gift and our furniture c
3 CONC ost $150 (a bedroom suite, divan, two easy chairs, heating stove, kitch
3 CONC en cabinet, perfection oil stove , and an unpainted table and chairs an
3 CONC d a pinao. WE pad for the stove with 10 per month ($25 in all) out of P
3 CONC aul’s wages from a mechanic shop he operated while we waited for our fi
3 CONC rst wheat crop. (We rented my dad’s land.) One month we h $60.00 left o
3 CONC ver and in Daddy’s car we took Lila and George and went shopping in Eni
3 CONC d. We had so much money we just couldn’t spend it all. I got three be
3 CONC autiful dresses for $10, new shoes, $2 and Paul got a sport coat and sl
3 CONC acks for $20. We the went to eat hamburgers at the popular "Pig Stand,
3 CONC " and went to a movie .25 each and went home with money.
3 CONT
3 CONT We had a big black and chrome stove and burned wood that Paul and Duane c
3 CONC ut out in Sand Hills on shoes and also my dad ha one ton of coal delive
3 CONC red to our coal bin, so we kept warm that fall.
3 CONT
3 CONT George and Lila and many other friends only had money to buy a sack of c
3 CONC oal each day. Some nights George and Lila used the coal money to go wi
3 CONC th us to the move and they stayed overnight with us to keep war. Our di
3 CONC van made into a bed. Doris managed a grocery store in town and visited u
3 CONC s a lot of times. We had lots of fun going to dances—mostly in homes, p
3 CONC arties at church and roller skating. There was a rink across the stree
3 CONC t from our house.
3 CONT
3 CONT On January 4, 1937, our precious Paula Jeanne was born--a much loved ba
3 CONC by. My mother and dad adored her, and Paul and I were free to go skati
3 CONC ng dancing, movies or whatever as parents were always so happy to have h
3 CONC er for an evening. I don’t suppose there were many days we didn’t see e
3 CONC ach other.
3 CONT
3 CONT The Byfield next door and we made a beautiful vegetable garden on a lot b
3 CONC etween our homes that we owned. We (Ann, my mom, and I canned lots of v
3 CONC eggies and we enjoyed lots of their fresh from picking.
3 CONT
3 CONT With young chickens to fry, new spuds and green veggies from the garden
3 CONC , we ate very well, and for little money. Of course, we had lots of ic
3 CONC e cre
